Sardinian producer Alessio Mereu already had a number of successful 12″ EPs under his belt on labels like Contexterrior and Tuning Spork before dropping his first full-length Tripolarity last summer. Caned in the clubs by DJs like Maetrik, DJ W!LD, Tim Green, Carlo Lio and Paco Osuna among others, Mereu’s reputation internationally as a maestro of contemporary acid grooves and brooding hypnotic techno was sealed. Now he’s known far beyond his native Mediterranean shores, DJing throughout Europe and producing releases for techno titans Cocoon Records and Poker Flat. Next up is his first solo EP of 2012 on his imprint AMAM Records called Those I’ve Left Behind featuring three new tracks plus a remix from fellow Poker Flat comrade, Guido Schneider!

“Distraught Again” is structured on subtly evolving percussion and a swaggering bassline with drops of acid accentuating the tension. “Distraught Again” echoes the essence of the kind of tracks produced back before Mereu was even born, but with the kind of precision tailored for contemporary club sound systems. Guido Schneider puts his own spin on “Distraught Again” by enhancing the staccato factor and focusing more on the rhythmic interplay than the original version’s melodic leanings.

“Those I’ve Left Behind” combines jacking beats with long, curving, winding synth lines that evoke a menacing atmosphere, crescendoing into a climax where all the track’s elements get tangled into one gratifying hot mess. Finally, as a digital-only bonus, “I’m The Machine” continues the jacking flavor as a defiant, robotic beast that stomps onto the dancefloor. Front to back, Those I’ve Left Behind shows that Alessio Mereu is undeniably moving forward with his productions.
