Theory Recordings ends its summer break with a vs EP featuring label boss Ben Sims remixing two original cuts from Scottish techno legend Stephen Brown.
Stephen Brown’s pedigree is enviable to say the least with releases for the likes of Transmat and DJax as well as recent material for Skudge garnering serious respect. Coming from the hip- hop/breakdancing scene and progressing to techno in the late 80’s and early 90’s he has much in common with Ben Sims, who tackles two of Brown’s originals in style here.
‘Fuego’ kicks things off with the sort of intelligent, soulful techno vibe that Brown has made his name for. Breathy, rhythmic leads skitter above drums that steadily evolve into a skipping, snare led funk while rich synths sporadically penetrate the groove beautifully.
Sims interpretation of ‘Fuego’ sees him carry on the sort of form he’s been enjoying for some time now. Taking a distorted loop of Brown’s original groove and stretching out a punching, syncopated drum assault underneath, it’s heavy number that never pushes things too far and displays Sims’ keen ear and sense of restraint when needed.
Brown’s second original is ‘Polar’, another slice of jittering funk that toys with just a few warm elements and rolls them out into a dynamic burner while Sims version brutally deconstructs, rebuilds and hammers home.
Ben Sims vs Stephen Brown ‘Fuego/Polar’ is released 14th October on Theory Recordings with a digital release to follow.
