Release Date: 17-07-2017
This July will see Icelandic imprint Æ Recordings return with its sixth release courtesy of Cold who delivers his five-track ‘Exiles’ EP.
Ísar Logi Arnarsson, better known as Cold garnered widespread attention in the mid-nineties with his track ‘Strobelight Network’, championed by Sven Vath as his closing record at Love Parade in Berlin 1995, and also the inaugural release on Iceland’s pioneering dub techno label Thule Records, of which Æ Recordings is a sub-label. Now after more than a 20 year hiatus the imprint welcomes the much-awaited return of Cold with five new original compositions of his stark and distinctive style.
Taking the lead on the record is ‘Aerials’ with its pulsating low-end drive, spiralling synthesizer whirls and stripped-back percussive edge, followed by ‘Phased Out’ which takes thing into more direct dub techno realms via bumpy rhythms, echoing dub chords and menacing bass tones.
Title-track ‘Exiles’ is up next, laying focus on distorted off-kilter percussion, metallic chimes and murky pad and vocal textures before ‘Dialogic’ ups the energy levels with chugging natural bass tones, poppy minimalistic percussion and glitched out synth lines. ‘Goosebumps’ then rounds out the package with a dropped-tempo dub aesthetic, shining a light on weighty sub drones, ethereal synth flourishes and minute clicks and cuts.
Cold’s ‘Exiles’ EP is out on Æ Recordings 17th July 2017.
