Cristoph Interview

UK dj and producer Cristoph has been in our radar for a long time and his latest promos definitely catch our interest, we had an opportunity to have a chat with him, focussing on the forthcoming “VLM01” compilation on DFTD Records.

– Hi Cristoph, hope everything is fine! How are you doing?
Hey mate, I’m good thanks, hope you are too. Just got back from DGTL Festival over in Amsterdam with my manager Kal and feeling really inspired.

– Thinking about the past, what got you interested in electronic music?
Growing up there was always some sort of music being played in my house. What really got my attention was all my brother’s Chicago House records. I used to listen to them for hours on end. Tracks by the likes of Masters At Work and MK really got me into house music as a whole.

– How long have you been working on music production and deejaying?
I’ve been deejaying for around 15 years, my dad bought me my first pair of decks and I basically followed in his and my brothers foot steps as both of them were dj’s. As for production, I’ve been messing around with Ableton for quite a while now, making silly bootlegs and stuff. But I’d say over the past 3-4 years I’ve basically sat at my computer trying to teach myself as much as I can at every spare moment I get, sometimes sitting up all through the night just messing around to see what certain things do.

– What artists and albums have helped shape your musical taste and personality?
I could honestly go on for hours about artists who have helped shape my musical taste. I’m really into Eric Prydz, I think the guy is a genius. Granted I don’t play his music but I do love to listen to everything he does and really enjoy seeing him play. I’m really into Maya Jane Coles as well as Hot Since 82, two amazing dj’s and producers who I have a lot of admiration for.

Albums I think one of the obvious choices is Daft Punk’s ‘Homework’, absolutely amazing!! Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ album helped with my taste and Giorgio Moroder’s work with a Moog Synthesizer on Donna Summer’s ‘I Feel Love’ is another inspirational piece of music for me.

– How do you feel to be one of the most promising UK artists?
To be honest I’ve never really looked at myself like that. I’m just so grateful for the chance I’ve been given and just want to keep working as hard as I can and hopefully I will reach where I want to be. I’m doing what I love!

– When did your relationship with Defected start?
Last summer, when they first heard ‘Guffaz’. The whole situation is so surreal as its one of my favourite labels so to work with them is beyond belief.  When they started to show interest in my tracks I began to attend as many events as I could that they were putting on just to try and meet everyone from the label and get to know them to try help myself to get signed. Ibiza, London, Amsterdam….it didn’t really matter, my focus was just to keep my name on their lips really.

– What about “VLM01” on DFTD? That’s the first compilation they’ll release on the sublabel and you mixed it, how was the process behind?
To be given the opportunity to do their first ever compilation is a massive honour for me. Kal and I went down to Defected HQ last November time just to meet Andy for a catch up and so he could get to see the direction we were wanting to go. It was then Andy mentioned it and said it was just an idea at the time and I jumped at the chance as if it was to become reality. At the start of this year it was confirmed and I was told ‘to do what I wanted’ with the whole compilation. I wanted to make sure people could tell it was me who had mixed it, so with the remixes etc, I hope that’s helped me show that.

– You will also appear on Underground Audio in mid June, what can you say about that?
I love this label!! They are a joy to work with and have had some quality releases by some amazing artists so it’s another one I feel privileged to be a part of. My last EP did well with them, ‘Shelter’ is still getting a lot of plays now by the likes of Hot Since 82, Sidney Charles, Sante and Edu Imbernon. Hopefully the new EP will help push my name out further.

– What gigs do you have coming up?
I’m playing Shindig’s 22nd birthday and then Source Bar in Maidstone on May 4th. I then have 2 weeks off before playing We Are Festival and Booom, Ibiza for Defected. Have Ministry Of Sound in June for Defected and lots of other gigs around the UK.

– What can we expect from Cristoph for the rest of this year?
As well as the compilation and the release you mentioned on Underground Audio I have another EP with DFTD. A release with Noir, an EP with Material and with Skint. Then remixes for Second City, Tube & Berger and Sascha Braemer.

I’m just going to continue writing music and hopefully it will keep on getting signed. As I said I’m doing what I love so there is no complaints at all.

– Thank you so much for the interview and good luck!
Thanks mate, appreciate the interview
