Like many a great label before it, Cartulis is a new imprint that’s stemmed from a party in London. Renowned for their debauchery fueled antics and strictly underground music policy, the clued-in soiree has hosted some of the scene’s most renowned DJs over the years, with guests such as Audio Werner, Claro Intelecto, Shaun Reeves, Luke Solomon, Glimpse, Subb-An and Arnaud Le Texier rocking the party to its core. For the label’s first party trick, label boss Unai Trotti calls on Rico Casazza to bring the noise; a job he does with sumptuous ease on the Leaving Last Vegas EP.
Sweaty, dark and atmospheric, the original’s melodic charms are aptly in line with the party itself. Imbued with gentle horns and a canny loop, it follows an enticing path that’s laden with unpredictable wares from beginning to end. Bass Culture staple Joel Alter then delves deep for the first of the remixes, with his remix of the title track one that’s wrapped in ominous overtones and subtle, clicking progressions.
The second of the originals is ”Departures”, a track that nods its head to some somewhat left-field airport samples. It’s a unique proposition for sure, but rather than go for the novelty, it still maintains a strident, discerning edge. This time, the track is remixed by none other than Brendon ‘Echologist’ Moeller, who jettisons the originals percussive facets in favour of a more dubby, 909-inspired workout. A seriously promising start to proceedings from a crew you’re sure to hear plenty more from in 2014.
