What do you do when a live project exceeds its own ambitions? You continue with successful performances and eventually head into the studio. Sounds simple and conclusive enough. In the case of Karocel that was exactly how they went about creating their first record.
Karocel is the result of the four member live act, Marbert Rocel, joining together with DJ Mathias Kaden and percussionist Michael Nagler. The six members became familiar with one another through their geographical proximity in the Gera-Jena-Erfurt region.
Although the Karocel live shows were well received, an album is an entirely different beast to conquer. Even with the packed schedule of events and individual songwriting habits, the wish for all six artists to work together on a deeper level sustained itself.
In the fall of 2012 everyone got together in Karocel’s studio for three intense jam sessions. With a single click it all began. After some time everything was strung together. Post-production vocals and overdubs weren’t needed. The ten pearls that emerged from those sessions glistened in their raw form. The direct and multifaceted nature of Karocel’s live performances was now present in a completed album format. To coincide with the purist recording process, Karocel took the album artwork into their own hands. Plaited is a complete work of art, no question.
Through various dramatic curves Plaited prances over the dance-floor. The pace of the album parallels a Saturday night out. Tracks like “Vox”, “Watts”, “Boyz” and “Don’t Play” accompany you while you’re warming up at the bar. “This One”, “Tease You” and “Undo” follow you onto the dance floor and “Whiteout” is what you’ll find you and your partner kissing to on the sofa in the corner. On the way home you’ll be accompanied “Parallels”.
