November sees UK house imprint Lost My Dog deliver it’s third ‘Family Affair’ Mix comp. Mixed by label co-honcho Pete Dafeet, the compilation follows on from previous editions with a mix of new and exclusive material, label back catalogue and guest remixes alongside an unmixed bundle.
Lost My Dog, via varied house tracks and mixes from the likes of Jay Tripwire, Burnski, Ian Pooley, Atjazz, Harold Heath and Nathan Coles as well as regular shows at London’s Fabric, has become one of the most consistent labels around, carrying on the torch from classic UK labels like Paper and DIY Discs.
Pete Dafeet has been at the helm (alongside Ian Straker and Najan Ward) since the label’s beginnings seven years ago while also being one of the label’s most prolific producers. Having released on Shaboom, Robsoul and Detour to name just a few, Dafeet’s house music pedigree is undoubted, with previous mixes, releases and compilations winning press accolades in spades.
With the three label samplers ahead of Dafeet’s ‘Family Affair’ seeing support from the likes of Matt Tolfrey, Laura Jones, Terry Francis, Rob Mello, Maceo Plex, Jimpster and Brothers Vibe there’s enough hints at quality but it’s the mix itself that really makes sense of everything.
Much like with Pete’s production output, we’re treated to a range of angles on house music in ‘Family Affair’. From the understated depths of chord-driven opener ‘In Flux’ to the bottom heavy, modern tech- house sounds of Giom’s ‘Beneath the Fold’ different tones and textures are prominent from the off. Cuts like Alessio Arcangeli’s remix of ‘In Flux’ and ‘Stutter’ alongside Pezzner’s rework of ‘Hit ‘Em Up’ provide a gutsy midsection of the mix but things never get too pounding, with melodies always heavily featured and drops into more introspective material providing depth.
‘Rush’, the Moodymanc dub of ‘Stutter’ and finally ‘Piano Track’ come together as a neat closer to the mix, evoking the sort of poignant lights-up dancefloor moments every good DJ set needs. Things don’t stop there either, with four remixes from Pezzner, Fred Everything, Demarkus Lewis and Nacho Marco serving as exclusives for the unmixed track bundle to accompany the mix.
Pete Dafeet’s ‘Family Affair’ on Lost My Dog will be released 19th November 2012.
