Sónar continues to expand this year’s program with the inclusion of two of today’s most relevant and creative musicians, Californian Anderson .Paak and Venezuelan Arca, live with Jesse Kanda AV. Anderson .Paak, one of the most breath-taking artists in today’s hip hop and R&B music scene, has been nominated for two Grammys for his excellent and universally praised album “Malibu”, which he will present live with his band, The Free Nationals. Additionally, Sónar has been chosen by the category defying musician and producer Arca, as his only worldwide festival performance this year, where he will present his forthcoming new material live with Jesse Kanda’s presence and visuals, which will further help to redefine him as a complex and evolving artist.
Also among the new artist additions is the long-awaited return of DJ Shadow 6 years since his last album. His highly visual show will combine new tracks from the recently released “The Mountain Will Fall”, alongside material from his legendary ground-breaking 20 year old debut album “Endtroducing …” which turned 20 this year. Belgian Dewaele brothers (2manydjs) band, Soulwax, will present their first album in more than a decade, in a live show featuring seven musicians (among them 3 drummers) and an onstage recreation of their Deewee recording studio.
Four other established producers will present their new material at the festival: British artist Clark, a mainstay of the Warp label, with a new album and a visual show in which two performers will accompany him; Frenchman Vitalic, presenting his recent album “Odissey”, with a spectacular stage show design; and the young but eminent Evian Christ and Lunice, both about to release their much anticipated debut LPs, will stage their prestigious new live shows.
This year Resident Advisor, the world’s leading electronic music site, will return to curate the SonarLab stage—this time on Saturday at Sónar by Night. The programme includes the exclusive premiere of Carl Craig’s Versus Synthesizer Ensemble, with the Detroit icon performing alongside a group of elite musicians including the pianist Francesco Tristano. There are also two exceptional back-to-back DJ pairings—Daphni (AKA Dan Snaith of Caribou) & Hunee, and Marcel Dettmann & Dr Rubinstein—plus UK garage trio t q d, Truss and Tessela as Overmono, and cult US duo Beautiful Swimmers.
The new circular sound and stage format of SonarCar has already confirmed its first hosts for Saturday night: Seth Troxler and Tiga, two of the most popular and respected names in electronic dance music in recent years will perform back2back in a marathon 6 hour set. Both share a breadth of vision and vast experience that makes them ideal candidates to take over SonarCar, where it is possible to develop long journeying sets from an assortment of genres, origins, epochs and tempos.
Sónar celebrates the 10th anniversary of experimental and avant-garde Icelandic label Bedroom Community, with performances by Valgeir Sigurdsson (its central figure and founder) and esteemed American composer Nico Muhly, who in addition to his Sónar by Day performance, will return on Sunday to perform as a pianist in the David Langconcert at L’Auditori.
The festival program includes three of today’s most interesting synth pop and melodic electronica bands. Sweden’s Little Dragon return to Sónar, where they have always been very well received, with new effusive and dazzling electronic pop songs, this time performing live for the first time at Sónar by Night. While at Sónar by Day, you will be able to enjoy the young and talented German musician Roosevelt, and Austrian duo HVOB, both combining shiny melodies with a supremely crafted sound design.
As always, the festival will present the very best djs and selectors from around the world. Sónar by Night will host an exclusive set from the amazing British producer Jon Hopkins -in one of his rare appearances as a DJ-, and two dance floor specialists: Italy’s Marco Carola and, from Canada, Heidi. While at Sónar by Day we will be able to relish in three of the international scene’s most exciting and unorthodox cult selectors: Scottish duo Optimo, Norway’s Prins Thomas (a key figure in Scandinavian cosmic disco genre) and Germany’s Lena Willikens.
New sounds in grime and British hip hop will have a special place at this year’s Sónar, including three new artists: the young and up-and-coming grime MC AJ Tracey; the more experienced Giggs, an enduring name on the London rap scene and Benji B, BBC Radio 1 star and prolific selector, with a set delivering exclusive tracks and the very best music from today’s UK scene.
Red Bull Music Academy will once again take over the SonarDôme stage at Sónar by Day, showcasing exceptional talent from around the world. Highlights include performances by synth pioneer Suzanne Ciani and footwork godfather RP Boo among emerging artists who have passed through Academy classrooms including: Marie Davidson, River Tiber, Julian Mayorga, Christian Tiger School and Pan Daijing.
