Techno veteran Steve Stoll is back in his 21st year in the game with a new EP alongside life long dance artist M.R.E.U.X. Entitled Capture, it boats five terrific tracks that will set any club alight.
Stoll has been digging in crates, headlining clubs around the world and running labels like Proper NYC all his musical life. He has released on Music Man, NovaMute and Hawtin’s Probe and here finds himself on Blumoog Music, the label run by collaborative partner M.R.E.U.X that is about “high-quality music and a platform where the artist can express himself without any musical limitations.” M.R.E.U.X. has always been an innovative DJ and producer and label boss with many strings to his bow, and this new label is just the most recent in a long line of esteemed projects for the Italian.
The captivating ‘Capture’ is six minutes of moody dub techno with a spartan atmosphere that really draws you in. Full of promise and suggestion, it works on both head and heel as lolling drums and spare chords roll on and on. ‘Obscene’ then masterfully picks up the pace but keeps things fully outer-space with its sonar blips, dancing hi hats and streamlined drum programming.
The short but sweet ‘Black Area’ is a trippy bit of sci-fi cinematics with wiry synths and then ‘Christ Complex’ hits hard with frazzled, dense and nebulous electronics wrapping round a hurried minimal techno drum line. It’s nervy and arresting stuff to be sure. A dub version is more serene and spacious, and takes you on a cosmic techno trip to another galaxy far away.
This is both a cerebral and physical EP that is filled with fresh techno offerings for those who know.
