Hard to believe it, but AMAM is now celebrating its third anniversary—these past three years have breezed by like a night of endless grooves. To mark the occasion, several of the label’s stalwarts from Italy and beyond, along with a couple newcomers, are teaming up for the first chapter of a new compilation series titled Hand Out.
First up is Hooved, following up his Black Lodge EP from late 2012, with “Ghost Son”. As the title implies, there’s a haunted feeling here, the thumping pulse and rackety percussion providing a sneaky vibe, with haunted house chords subtly accenting the track’s paranoia factor. Then, Tobia Coffa offers “Floating Pad”, named for the weightless, atmospheric Detroitesque synth pad that floats through the cut’s duration, a nice melodic change of pace. The compilation’s energetic halfway point comes courtesy of Fabio Caria, a new kid on the block whose “No Paper” bares its fangs from the get-go. His entry into the AMAM team fits in perfectly with the label’s knack for combining stark, crisp beats with encompassing atmospherics, filling the air with synthetic clouds as it progresses. Romanian duo Dirty Culture & Nusha make their AMAM debut, contributing the EP’s most electro-inclined number with “Living on Impulse”, but still fitting in with a classic house template, at once both laid back and forward-driven. The ever humble AMAM founder Alessio Mereu leaves his own track for last: “Who is the Spy” is a menacing whirlwind of layered, interplaying percussive elements, a snarling synth and a creepy, disguised voice—a real techno whodunit. Put your hands up for Hand Out!
