Life And Death’s standout 2019 continues in 2020 for the label’s 10th anniversary, kicking things off with a single pulled from Swedish innovator Mr. Tophat’s 4-part album ‘Dusk to Dawn’ released last year, with label boss DJ Tennis stepping up to remixer duties.

Mr. Tophat always makes a big splash, whether crafting epic, disco-licked house adventures, putting out strictly limited vinyl on his own Junk Yard Connections or collaborating with pop sensation Robyn. Next to an EP with the Swedish star, he also co-wrote two songs on her latest album ‘Honey’. His taste and style straddles various musical worlds and means you can never predict his next move. A true original, last year alone he’s put out a magnificent four-part album of house, ambient and leftfield electronics and now aims for the dance floor on this latest massive.

DJ Tennis first heard this track when Axel Boman played it at Miami Music Week during a back to back set. It mesmerised the crowd and a few months later, Tennis was asked to remix it. “I realised how well crafted the original was,” he says, ”with a classic flute player, incredible singer and synths and analogue compression – it was a work of art like a pop track on a major label. Beautifully made.” The pair later hooked up and grew closer over a shared love of sonic craftsmanship and real attention to detail, so Tennis decided to re-release the original and work on the remix as much more of a pop track than a dance floor tool.

At over 12 minutes long ‘Time Lapse’ is another Mr. Tophat masterclass in musical tension and narrative that is embellished with smart filter tweaks, dreamy vocals sounds and pixelated melodic rain. It is driven along by rubbery and propulsive kick that form an inviting bed from which you can gaze at the cosmic and sinewy chords that constantly shape-shift towards the heavens.

Recently rewarded as an Essential New Tune of Pete Tong’s, DJ Tennis then steps up with his pop remix and is himself having a busy year that sees him release the ‘Redrago’ album with Red Axes. Here he ups the impact of the drums with crisp percussion and more upright drums. Gorgeous arps will have people reaching for the skies and utterly lost in amongst the stars.
