For Stefan Rose, music has been more than a career choice. It has become a way of channelling life’s defining moments into something creative. After years balancing his passion for electronic music alongside a corporate career, personal loss prompted a complete change in direction, leading him to pursue music full time. Since then, releases on Dear Deer, Frequenza, ZEHN Records, Selador, UGENIUS and Music is 4 Lovers have marked a steady rise, while his latest single, ‘Closing In’, captures the melodic, emotional and club driven sound he continues to refine. We spoke with Stefan about his journey, finding his artistic identity and the experiences that continue to shape both his music and outlook.
Looking back at your journey to date, ‘Closing In’ feels like another chapter rather than an isolated release. When you hear the track now, what does it represent to you personally?
It’s been an exciting time for me lately! After a couple of years where I was spending almost all my time making music, I’m now finding myself on the road more, playing the tracks that I’ve put my heart and soul into. ‘Closing In’ is already my third official release this year, not counting the many unofficial edits I’ve also put out, and it’s still only summer! This new single is a great marker of my current sound, with vocals that resonate, hypnotic melodies, and an infectious groove that makes you want to move.
You’ve spoken openly about how personal loss changed your perspective on life and pushed you to pursue music full time. How has that experience shaped not just your work ethic, but the kind of artist you want to become?
I’ve had a passion for electronic music since I was a teenage bedroom DJ. For years it was a hobby, one I took seriously, but never as a full-time endeavor. It was only more recently, after losing my brother and father, that I came to fully appreciate how finite life is and how important it is to spend time doing the things you love. I also found music production to be deeply therapeutic during a time of personal loss. As hard as that period was, it provided an environment for artistic expression that allowed me to pursue a lifelong dream.
The videos on your YouTube channel reveal far more of the person behind the music than ever before. Was there a conscious decision to become more open about your journey?
Absolutely. Up until this year, I had been almost solely focused on learning music production from the ground up and making my own tracks. This year, with a healthy catalog of music either released, signed or unreleased, I wanted to show more to the world about the person behind the music. My artistic path is atypical in many respects, including pursuing music full-time after taking a break from corporate roles, using personal loss as a catalyst for creative growth, as well as the unique sound that I’ve developed as a DJ and Producer. Finding ways to tell this story both within but also outside my music has been a focus for me this year and will remain so going forward.
We recall one of the videos, where you note “You don’t always have control over what you receive, but you usually have control over how you react to what you receiveit.” Has that become something of a personal philosophy beyond music?
That is one of my favorite lines from my YouTube videos. It’s certainly a personal philosophy that extends far beyond music. That line signifies a positive mindset that for me has been instrumental in overcoming many of life’s challenges. Being able to take a negative situation and turn it into a force for positive personal growth is something I strive to do. There are many examples of this in my life, including that I became a full-time music producer and touring DJ in the face of family loss.
Musically, your sound spans melodic Techno, Indie Dance and House. How important has it been to build something that genuinely reflects your own sonic identity?
I think building a unique sonic identity is the most important thing for any music artist in any genre. Ultimately this is how your fans will identify you, connect with you and remember you. I’ve never been a huge subscriber to sub genres in electronic music, as they mean different things to different people, and can sometimes even pigeon-hole artists into a certain sound. I instead simply produce using elements that speak to me, especially subtle yet impactful melodies and vocals, as well as powerful basslines and drums. The former provides the emotional hook that helps the listener remember the song, and the latter helps the track moves a dancefloor. I see many other artists who focus on one of these things or the other, but not often on both at the same time. It’s certainly not always an easy balance, but I believe that this contrast makes my sound stand out.
What makes ‘Closing In’ an accurate reflection of where you are creatively right now?
‘Closing In’ features many of the elements I just mentioned, including the hypnotic vocals sung by an amazing singer with lyrics that we wrote, the infrequent but memorable synthesizer notes and a groove that really gets a club moving. Almost every sound in the song was designed from scratch. It’s been a standout track in my shows all year, but it’s also a record that leaves a lasting impact long after the night is over.
Your catalogue now includes releases on Dear Deer, Frequenza, ZEHN Records, Selador, UGENIUS and most recently, Music is 4 Lovers. What moment or milestones made you realise your career was gaining momentum?
There comes a point as an artist where longer term trends start to become clear, and for me 2026 has been clarifying given the continued momentum in reputable labels signing my tracks. As far as specific milestones, I still can’t fully believe that my debut EP “Abyss” with Dear Deer reached #3 on the overall Beatport chart last year. It validated so much of what I’ve been working towards and made it all worth it!
Throughout your productions, we really feel a balance of emotional melodies with a darker, club-focused energy. Musically, is that contrast a reflection of your own experiences, or does it happen naturally when you’re writing music and in the studio?
My music is an expression of my own personality. The more difficult life experiences tend to come out in the darker, club-oriented bass lines and percussion, whereas my own optimism and outlook often express themselves through warmer melodic elements. I usually write my own lyrics, and vocals can provide additional contrast.
Artists often talk about finding their sound. For you, has that been about discovering something new, or uncovering something that was always there?
I’ve had this desire to pursue electronic music since I was young, and for years I could never properly set aside the time to learn music production at a high level. Hence more recently, when I took a break from corporate roles to fully lean into music, I’ve been catching up on lost time in some respects. There’s certainly a degree of uncovering something that’s always been there, but it’s also constantly evolving with new experiences as well!
How important is storytelling for you within your own music?
Very important. Music for me is another language, and most of my tracks have their own stories to tell!
What’s your perspective, positive or negative, on the use of AI in music creation?
I’m not against it if it’s used as a creative tool, but if it’s used to create entire songs with text prompts then that’s a bigger issue. Personally, it’s not something that’s ingrained in my production process.
With ‘Closing In’ now released, can you share with our readers some of your forthcoming releases, tour dates, and projects for the remainder of the year?
I have an upcoming EP with a talented singer slated for release on a well-known label this Fall, in addition to several other projects that I’ve been working on. I’ll also be rounding out this summer with a couple more gigs in Europe, before heading back home to the U.S. for several events in September. With plenty more to come after that!
