PACK SHOT Robotek Reagan - TRANSHUMAN AGENDA - Void Space Institute

Artist: Robotek Reagan
Label: Void Space Institute
Cat. #: VSI-LP-00001
Format: Digital
Release Date: 19th September 2022
2. simp4u
4. revelations
5. ʍօօռ Ɖʀɨք
6. Birds On Acid Lake
7. æ y t h e r ▁ ▂ ▄ β Ξ λ Ͼ Ϛ Η – feat. Dina Moursi

Electronic experimentalist Robotek Reagan dazzles once more with TRANSHUMAN AGENDA, a seven-track EP that marks his biggest musical statement to date.

Sci-fi anime obsessive Reagan has made an immediate mark since setting out on a solo mission once his Dance Spirit duo disbanded. His own Void Space Institute has been home to his high concept sounds which mix up techno, electro, IDM and plenty more into utterly unique and thrilling new musical worlds. After a series of singles and EPs he returns to explore a multitude of more pensive styles with a smattering of thoughtful vocal pieces.

Explains the artist of this new work, “On this EP cover we find our fully grown chimera nanodaptogen from the CTEN experiments on Island 33 in a scene where he’s just broken out of the abandoned underground facilities after being stuck for thousands of years alone in solitude. Freed by a man named Eon Æytheon, he dedicated his life to helping this mysterious adventurer, the first being to ever show it kindness, and help uncover the wild mysteries behind the universe they live in. Upon seeing the ocean and sunset for the first time, he gazes in wild wonder. Having only known infinity to exist in the lonely confines of his growth tank, this new scene showed him a new world of infinity consisting of hope, beauty, and desire.”

This collection opens with the soul-soothing and cinematic ambiance of ‘TRANSHUMAN AGENDA.’ Gorgeous pads and soft melodies drift over gentle rhythms to transplant you to a future world. There is more exquisite synth design on ‘simp4u’ as well as supple bass and skittish drum patterns. As they float amongst the stars, airy vocals add human soul. The fantastic ‘Save Point’ layers twinkling keys and bubbling synth sounds into suspensory ambient bliss and ‘Revelations’ then hypnotises over seven minutes of widescreen downtempo magic. The smeared pads, meandering bass and rippling chords are finished with more zoned-out vocal sounds.

The trip takes a turn into freeform jazz sounds and off-grid beats on ‘ʍօօռ Ɖʀɨք’ which is a woozy, lilting cut that conveys a sense of futuristic romance. The 303-laced ‘Birds On Acid Lake’ then heads off into deep space and pulsing techno territory with warm, powerful drums and last of all ‘æ y t h e r ▁ ▂ ▄ β Ξ λ Ͼ Ϛ Η’ feat. Dina Moursi is another stylish post-rave comedown with scintillating drum patterns and heart-melting vocals.

This is a spellbinding collection from the unique and hyperactive mind of Robotek Reagan.

PACKSHOT Various Artists (incl. Frifot, Vinny Villbass & Boblebad) - Badabing Remixed - Badabing Diskos

Various ‘Badabing Remixed’

Artist: Various Artists
Title: Badabing Remixed
Label: Badabing Diskos
Cat. #: badabing06ep
Format: Digital
Release Date: 20th September 2022
1. Frifot – I Built My Spaceship out of Cartoon Dust (Doc L Junior Lonely Space Dub)
2. Vinny Villbass – Trust (Frifot Rmx)
3. Boblebad – Ørken (Vinny Villbass Diversion)

Up and coming Nordic-disco label Badabing Diskos serves up a trio of new remixes from talented associates Doc L Junior, Frifot and Vinny.

Since launching earlier in the year, Badabing has already served up a series of standout early EPs from the likes of Vinny Villbass, Sommerfeldt and diskJokke. This latest offering brings a different perspective to some key tracks, all of which show off the label’s rich and musical mix of house and disco sounds.

Doc L Junior goes first with a Lonely Space Dub of Frifot’s ‘I Built My Spaceship out of Cartoon Dust’. It’s a brilliantly charismatic and cosmic cut with bouncing bass and humanoid vocals layered up with future synth sounds that brings some tripped-out fun to the dance floor.

Norwegian space enthusiast Frifot then steps up himself with a take on label mainstay Vinny Villbass’s ‘Trust’ tune. It shows off his synth mastery with mellifluous chords dancing above light and airy drums that suspend you in space. It’s a colourful groove with sprinklings of disco dust.

Last of all is Vinny Villbass, a pivotal figure in the Oslo scene as a DJ, producer and promoter behind several key club nights. His Diversion take on Boblebad’s ‘Ørken’ heads into the night with hip swinging claps and mysterious and enchanting leads over sleek space-house drums.

These are three more adventurous and vibrant tracks from the Badabing crew.

PACKSHOT Butane & Andras Toth - Reaction EP - Extrasketch

Butane & Andras Toth ‘Reaction EP’

Artist: Butane & Andras Toth
Title: Reaction EP
Label: Extrasketch
Cat. #: EX39
Format: Digital
Release Date: 9th September 2022

3. New York New York
4. Elevate
5. Little Reminder

Butane links up with frequent collaborator Andras Toth as the pair return to Extrasketch with five fresh cuts for their ‘Reaction’ EP.

Equally as creative as a solo artist as he is working alongside a selection of regular collaborators, San Francisco’s Andrew Rasse, aka Butane, continues to expand his rich discography of quality productions across house, techno, minimal and beyond. Fresh from a run of releases on his home imprint Extrasketch, September sees Rasse back alongside fellow studio partner and Alphahouse alumnus Andras Toth as the pairing return to the label for the fifth time with ‘Reaction’.

Opener ‘The King Is Dead’ is a low-slung minimal production peppered with punchy tribal drums and icy hats, while ‘Weather The Storm’ remains decidedly deep but takes the energy up with a driving bassline and off-kilter rolling percussion, creating a snaking, hazy groove. ‘New York New York’ is a freeform funky tech house cut, with acid-fuelled stabs and warping electronics which create a smoky late-night affair. ‘Elevate’ sees the pair dive deep into a drummy, cascading trip through hypnotic heavy metallic techno textures. To close, ‘Little Reminder’ mixes playful organic tones with a heady groove to offer up a certified after-hours cut.

Jan Steiner ‘Once Upon A Time’

Artist: Jan Steiner
Title: Once Upon A Time
Label: Traum
Cat. #: Traum V273
Release Date: 23. September 2022

Debut Album by Jan Steiner!

Here we are releasing a full length album by Jan Steiner, a German artist who lives in Ireland. He has just recently released a track on Tour De Traum XXIII which needless to say, we liked a lot. Jan is still an upcoming artist but has been recognized by people with taste. He is not part of any scene but writes music solemnly for himself. The theme of his album is “The Brothers Grimm” (germ. Gebrüder Grimm) which was right away very temping for us. For those of you who have known us for a longer time now, will remember that we had a legendary Traum label video feature in 2007 for Electronic Beats (Slices 03 -07) filmed in a vintage fairytale forest which featured a lot of the Brother Grimm tales! A place we all had been going to since our childhood. So all evolved naturally here.

Jan is a multi-faced artist who writes melodic techno and listening music and modern piano music. He was recently included in a Nils Frahm piano list at Spotify. He writes his music surrounded by the picturesque Irish seaside and nature. His music has an almost meditative feel to it and clads you in lush melodies. This is his description of the project in his own words showing his personal involvement:

“My album is inspired by the stories of the Brothers Grimm. I read these stories as a child, and they left a vivid impression on me. When I moved from Germany to Ireland, the mystic and ancient landscape re-ignited my childhood imagination. The tales re-surfaced in my consciousness. I turned to music to re-tell their stories.

The album was created during the stressful COVID period over the last two years. Working on it helped me escape and switch off from reality and emerge in a phantastic imaginary world.

My musical journey follows the mythology and folklore of these iconic stories. I committed the story telling tradition to electronic music and brought this romantic period into the 21st century.

The music evokes the vivid rhythm of nature and environment- light and darkness, movement and stillness, depth, and soaring heights. Melody and rhythm absorb the heart and soul of these stories, evoking deep-seated memories of dark, unknown forests and forgotten places. The balance of good and evil shifts and swings like branches in the wind.

The physical and sensual music, inspired by these stories, speaks the language of nature and imagination. The enchanting world of Grimm’s fairy tales correspond with the spirit of the music.

The album invites the listener to join in this journey of the emotional world of romanticism, fairytales, and mystic nature.

It starts with the classic intro “once upon a time” evoking an image of the listener opening the book of the brothers Grimm to read their stories.

Each song takes quotes either from one of the Grimm’s fairytales or of Jan’s imagination of pictures and landscapes relating to the fairytale word and romantic epoch.

“Sterntaler” (eng. The Star Talers) captures the moment when the good child just after having given away her last shirt is standing alone and naked in the field when the sky opens, and stars fall down turning into money to make her rich until the end of her life. “And thus, she stood there, with nothing left at all, when suddenly some stars fell down from heaven, and they were nothing else but hard shining talers, and although she had just given her shift away, she was now wearing a new one which was of the very finest linen. Then she gathered together the money into it and was rich all the days of her life.”

“Frau Holle” (eng. Mother Hulda or Old Mother Frost): “Don’t be afraid, dear child. Stay here with me, and if you do my housework in an orderly fashion, it will go well with you. Only you must take care to make my bed well and shake it diligently until the feathers fly, then it will snow in the world. I am Frau Holle.”

“Dornröschen und die letzte Fee” (eng. Little brier-rose or sleeping beauty): “The eleventh fairy had just pronounced her blessing when the thirteenth suddenly walked in. She wanted to avenge herself for not having been invited, and without greeting anyone or even looking at them she cried out with a loud voice, “In the princess’s fifteenth year she shall prick herself with a spindle and fall over dead.” And without saying another word she turned around and left the hall. Everyone was horrified, but then the twelfth fairy, who had not yet offered her wish, stepped forward. Because she was unable to undo the wicked wish, but only to soften it, she said, “It shall not be her death. The princess will only fall into a hundred-year deep sleep.”

“Schwarzwald” (here rather generalised as Black Forest): the dark, mystic forest plays a central role in many tales that were recorded by the brothers Grimm or others such as Wilhelm Hauff. Hauff’s fairytale “Das kalte Herz” (Heart of Stone) does not begin with the typical “once upon a time” but rather: “If you travel through south Germany, never forget to visit the Black Forest….”

“Waldesnacht” (translated as “night in the woods”) is a word creation and a quote taken from Joseph von Eichendorff’s poem „Sehnsucht” (yearning): …where the woods rustle so gently; of springs that rush out from the clefts into the night of the woods.

“Licht und Finsternis” (eng. light and darkness): the mergence of light and dark, of reality and fantasy are typical for the romantic epoch. This song resembles the image of sunrise in which light and darkness fight for the upper hand. .

“The funked-up Wolf” is a reminiscence to the “big bad wolf” in “little red riding hood”: a big bad Wolf wants to eat the girl and her food in the basket she is meant to bring to her grandmother who lives alone in the woods. The wolf secretly stalks her behind trees, bushes, shrubs, and patches of little and tall grass. He approaches Little Red Riding Hood, and she naïvely tells him where she is going.

“And lived happily ever after…”: the album ends with the classical phrase thereby closing the imaginary book and hence the journey into the world of the fairytales of the brothers Grimm.

“Father reads” is a bonus track- an improvisation evoking evening storytelling, a father reading fairytales to his children, their eyes large with interest and imaginings.“
